The administration of US President Joe Biden has imposed new restrictions on the sale of some high-tech computer chips to China and Russia.

As reported by Ukrinform, The New York Times reports this.

The new restrictions apply to high-end chip models known as graphics processors or GPUs sold by Silicon Valley companies Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.

Such products were originally developed for image processing in video games, but over the past decade they have been widely used by scientists and Internet companies in the largest supercomputers used for applications such as speech and object recognition in photographs.

Supercomputers are used in applications involving weapons development and intelligence gathering. Artificial intelligence-based technology is also increasingly used for purposes such as identifying faces in video images.

The new restrictions are said to be part of a “cold war” between China and the US for priority in advanced technologies. The Biden administration has taken measures to limit access to advanced chips and foreign semiconductor manufacturing by companies like China’s Huawei, based on restrictions imposed under former President Donald Trump. China has developed many chips of its own, but often relies on factories in Taiwan to manufacture the most advanced models.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Russian Federation is forced to use chips from dishwashers and refrigerators in military equipment due to the shortage caused by sanctions on Moscow for its aggression against Ukraine.
