According to Montenegrin Minister of Public Administration, Marash Dukai, hackers attacked the country’s websites and databases with the help of Cuban ransomware and a new virus called Zero Date. According to him, most government websites have been temporarily disabled as a precautionary measure.

“Montenegro is not alone in this situation, our NATO partners are also with us,” Dukai said. said.

After meeting with FBI representatives in the US, Montenegrin Interior Minister Filip Adzic said that the FBI’s rapid response team in Montenegro will assist in combating cyberattacks.

“This is another proof of the excellent cooperation between the United States and Montenegro,” he said.

Dusan Polovych, head of Montenegro’s cybersecurity agency, said citizens’ personal data did not fall into the hands of cybercriminals. And while not directly naming the Russian Federation as the culprit of the cyberattacks, Montenegrin state broadcaster RTCG, citing sources at the country’s security agency, said Russia was behind the attack, prompting the Montenegrin government to turn to the United States. The Russian Federation has repeatedly tried to destabilize the internal political situation in Montenegro. In 2016, a year before joining NATO, Montenegro thwarted a coup attempt involving Russia.
