The Aspide complex is a modernization of the American licensed air-to-air missile AIM-7 Sparrow, which was carried out by the Italian company Selenia in 1977.

Spada Aspide is a land-based short-range air defense system for air defense of certain areas or objects. The complex can be used against aircraft, helicopters and aircraft, including air-to-ground missiles. All vehicles of the complex are built on a towed chassis and can be quickly delivered to a specific location and ready for further use after deployment.

It is a towed van with the Oerlikon Skyguard control system, two radar stations, other radio equipment and an operator’s cabin. Depending on the modification, the surveillance and search radar allows you to monitor the weather in a radius of up to 20 kilometers. There is also an artillery guidance and guidance station and an optical-electronic system. Skyguard independently finds targets or accepts predetermined target instructions, and also processes data for firing and controls launchers.

The Aspide launcher is built on a wheeled platform with struts (jacks). The main part of the air defense system with four transport and launch containers for missiles is located on the support rotation device. Two target lighting antennas are mounted on it.

For firing, an Aspide guided missile with a semi-active radar homing head is used, which requires illumination of the target from the carrier. For example, in the Spanish modification of the Toledo air defense system, the Aspide missile in the Shorad version has an enhanced high-explosive warhead weighing 35 kg, a launch weight of 228 kg, a length of 3.63 m, a diameter of 203 mm. , and a wingspan of 1 m are placed in a sealed transport-launch container. The missile, which flies at a speed of 1324 m/s after launch, ensures the defeat of the target at a maximum code range of 12,000 m and at an altitude of 6,000 m-code.
