Remaking and remastering games has become a trend in the sector and the truth is that it has created mixed feelings. For some they are a success, for others not so much, and there is also a sector that is completely against it because they think that they are “sacacuartos” and that it’s better to innovate instead of launching the same game years ago with a facelift.

The truth is that I fully understand these three views and I find them respectablebut the truth is that the world of video games has been somewhat stagnant for years and that the developers have become so rigid around the classic sandbox concept with role-playing touches that often make me feel like I’m playing the same thing over and over, even though I have “other” games at hand.

I will not go into this controversy because it is not the main topic of this opinion, but I want to point out that sometimes the remake allows the introduction of improvements and innovations that make the experience much betterand much more fun than the original game. Diablo II Resurrected is a good example and the Resident Evil 2 Remake is a measure of the value a remake can bring.

Personally, I have a pretty clear opinion. I like remakes and remasters of classic video games, but only when you are meet a number of conditions very important:

  • They are true to the essence of the original. They don’t have to be identical, but they need to retain that “something” that made them unique.
  • They are well made both on a technical and optimization level and do not show any type of major game-impacting bug.
  • They are not overpricedand therefore offers reasonable value in this respect.

When a game doesn’t meet all of these conditions, it’s likely that we’ll end up with an unnecessary remake, which happened recently The Last of Us Part I, a remake of the PS3 original, which has already been remastered for PS4, and which is coming to the market at a price of 80 euros. Do we need a remake of a game that came out in June 2013 and was remastered in 2014 for the previous generation of consoles? Is it fair that this remake looks like a PS4 game and costs 80 euros? Someone can tell me that yes, personally I am quite clear that it is not.

Now it’s your turn, are you for or against remakes and remasters? Read in the comments.
