The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is making plans to shut down particle accelerators, including the Large Hadron Collider, during an energy crisis.
This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to The Wall Street Journal.
As CERN’s head of the energy management commission, Serge Claude, said, the organization’s electricity supplier – the French company EDF – is discussing a scenario in which the operator warns of the need to reduce electricity consumption in one day.
“This will not shut down the Large Hadron Collider, but will instead shut down other particle accelerators and reduce energy consumption by 25 percent,” Claude said. Said.
According to him, the organization needs to avoid a sudden power outage that could disable $4.4 billion of equipment.
We will remind: the large hadron collider with a length of more than 26 km is located on the border of France and Switzerland. It is used to study protons and other fundamental particles.
