Global technology company HONOR has launched an initiative called Gateway to the Future to enrich cultural heritage with the power of technology.

The company asked two popular artists to use augmented reality (AR) to creatively redesign the iconic Wasserschloss monument in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Demonstrating the growing interest in the growth of metavers and hybrid tourism, the project aims to inspire creative talent worldwide by leveraging innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and Spatial Sound to empower people. connecting with the cultural background in more inclusive ways and supporting global tourism.

Embracing Cultural Heritage in the Metaverse

HONOR chose Hamburg as the pilot site for the project to contribute to digital cultural development and inspire people from all over the world to reimagine cultural treasures in the metaverse.

The company partnered with AR and VR development company ARLOOPA to bring the project to life and collaborated with renowned artists Yunuene and Timo Helgert, who creatively transformed the famous Wasserschloss building.

In his work titled “Sailing in Time”, Yunuene pointed to the evolution of the city port by showing how innovation in maritime logistics has transformed over time with its unique visual aesthetic. Timo Helgert’s “Future in Bloom” takes a more futuristic approach and creatively imagines what the Wasserschloss would look like in a green future where beautiful plants and endangered species can thrive in Hamburg as one of the greenest cities in the world.

George Zhao, CEO of HONOR, said: “As a global technology company, we want to develop smart device technology that allows people to experience cultural treasures of the past while exploring the possibilities of the future.” We are now seeing more use of AR and AI technologies that have contributed to the hybrid tourism boom, enhancing the physical experiences for smartphone users around the world.”

Immersive experiences with the power of AI and AR

With this initiative, HONOR highlighted hybrid tourism, an emerging trend following the recovery of global tourism. AR experiences at Wasserschloss bring the digital and physical worlds together, allowing travelers to experience cultural heritage in a new way.
