Over the next five years, Canada plans to allocate C$875.2 million (about $730 million) to strengthen the cybersecurity of government systems.

This is stated in the draft state budget submitted to parliament, as reported by a Ukrinform correspondent.

“The 2022 budget proposes to allocate $875.2 million over five years, starting with this, and $238.2 million for additional measures to respond to changing cyber threats,” the draft document said.

It was noted that $263.9 million of this amount will be used to increase the capacity of the Canadian Communications Security Center to carry out cyber operations to prevent and protect against cyber attacks.

The Center for Communications Security will receive an additional $180.3 million to “prevent and respond to cyberattacks on critical infrastructure.”

The final tranche of $252.3 million will enable the Center for Communications Security to “make critical government systems more resilient to cyber incidents.”

Separately, the project cites $178.7 million to strengthen cybersecurity for small ministries, agencies, and state-owned companies.

The Center for Communications Security is a Canadian intelligence agency responsible for foreign electronic intelligence. A few years ago, a special department was set up to deal with cybersecurity. The intelligence service has the authority to conduct cyber operations designed to prevent systems from failing.
