The Weapons Development and Technological Infrastructure Directorate of the Israeli Ministry of Defense showed what the Carmel combat vehicle of the future will look like.
Carmel is a program for the creation of armored vehicles of the future, on which the Israeli Ministry of Defense has been working for several years. The ministry signed a contract with Israel’s three largest defense companies, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Rafael and Elbit Systems. As a result, three concepts of the combat vehicle of the future were created.
The concept presented by Elbit is based on a system called IronVision. It is based on technology developed for F-35 fighters: information is displayed on the helmet display, as in modern fighter pilots. The concept relies on the use of artificial intelligence to accelerate decision making and beat targets more accurately.
The company “Raphael” has developed an innovative “transparent” cabin design that will provide the crew with a single 360-degree picture obtained from a large number of sensors. The technology uses augmented reality to obtain information and data about the battlefield in real time.
IAI engineers developed a platform to display data on both large panoramic screens and operators’ personal screens. The platform was created on the basis of artificial intelligence technology, which will help detect threats, control the weapon system, provide effective target destruction, as well as autonomous movement of the machine over various terrains.
Extensive automation in all variants of the Carmel machine made it possible to reduce the number of crew to two people.
The prototypes of the companies “Elbit” and “Raphael” are equipped with 30-millimeter guns, and in special slots on the roof of the combat vehicle can be placed unmanned aerial vehicles, which, if necessary, can be launched.
“The combat vehicle of the future will be equipped with artificial intelligence, autonomous and automated systems. The vehicle will be compact, agile, efficient, invincible, easy to maintain and affordable,” the Israeli Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
