The end of the physical chip: 3.4 billion people will use eSIMs by 2025

Research presented this week juniper research it turned out that By 2025, the number of mobile phones using eSIM technology is expected to reach 3.4 billion.. Virtual SIM (as it is also called) allows users to use more than one line and connections on a single chip that is already built into the devices.

Currently, Juniper survey data has shown that 1.2 billion phone lines use this device type in devices. However, this number is expected to almost triple in the coming years compared to the latest data obtained in 2021.

Research presented by TeleGeography has shown that there are 8.05 billion active lines worldwide using a wide variety of technology types. Almost half of these numbers are now expected to work via eSIM.

One of the main advantages of this type of SIM cards is that they are not limited to mobile phones or tablets connected to the network. This allows multiple devices considered smart to use the eSIM connection, as is the case with smart refrigerators released in recent years.

iPhone 14 will have factory technology

Understanding the trend that the market is following, Apple has announced that the iPhone 14 and all variants of the device – iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro Max – will not have an entry for physical SIM cards. From now on, the manufacturer’s devices will only have space for eSIM.

However, this type of technology will only be available for devices sold in the US. Although there is a specific end for this type of device in the country, models that are sold in other regions such as Brazil will still have an entry for the physical SIM card.

In Europe and Asia, the use of eSIM is gaining support, and the trend is that more operators and smartphone manufacturers will switch to this practice over the next few months. In Brazil, the use of eSIM is already possible on devices such as smartwatches, and so we should expect this to become a trend here as well with the advent of 5G.

Also, according to Apple, the use of eSIM provides greater security for consumers, since if the device is lost or stolen, the chip is not compromised. In this case, the user just needs to contact the operator and request a blocking.
