Ever since Google launched the latest version of its Chromecast with Google TV, and it’s been a long time since then, many have been waiting for the company to complement the “premium” product with a more affordable one. dongle has seen the light for ten years, which is said to have soon become a success due to its simplicity. Because nothing else is needed to turn a dull TV into a list, with the only help of a mobile (and its corresponding connection, of course).
So there have been rumors for months about the arrival of a Chromecast trimmed down compared to the current version, but also cheaper. And it seems like now yes, it would be on its way, they haven’t called it yet ChromecastHD, it is unknown whether because that will be its actual commercial title or to clearly differentiate itself from the 4K version. Kuba Wojciechowski, the source of these reports gathered at 9to5Google, known for his history with Google devices and software, has no doubts.
In this Twitter thread, Wojciechowski breaks down the features of the upcoming Chromecast HD, which he claims has received a developer-focused build of the software that will drive it, detailing several features of the new Chromecast. ribbon from Google, including:
- Amlogic S805X2 chipset with support for video decoding using the AV1 codecmore modern than the current Chromecast model, although less powerful and limited to 1080p.
- 1.5 MB of RAMwhich is also a reduction from the 4K model, albeit less, by just 25% (the current model has 2GB of RAM).
Of course, the Chromecast HD would launch with Android 12, while the 4K version didn’t get the Android 10 update it came with; but not with Android 13, because the new version of the operating system increased the minimum requirements. As for the price, it would be around $39.99/EURcompared to the 69.99 dollars / euros that the current version costs.
Overall, it should be noted that all the news that this Chromecast HD has compared to the current version is expected to be received soon by the revision that it should have, and we are talking briefly about the rest of the year. But both news have not been confirmed yet, so we have to wait first for its announcement, second for its sale.
Interested in Chromecast now? The current version, 4K with Google TV, is therefore a safe bet, even if its price on Google’s official website has not changed by a penny since its launch, you can find it cheaper on other websites. For example:
- Chromecast with Google TV for €59.90 on Amazon.
- Chromecast with Google TV refurbished for €50.85 on PcComponentes.
