A group of researchers from Juntendo University in Tokyo and Osaka University conducted a clinical trial using a special type of stem cell to find new ways to treat acute heart disease.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by NHK.

The researchers said they transplanted layers of heart muscle cells into a patient with acute heart failure.

It is stated that the cell layers are formed from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells), which are obtained by reprogramming the cells in the human body and can transform into different body tissues.

The surgery was performed at Juntendo University in August.

The team also reported that the patient over the age of 60 is making satisfactory progress and is expected to be discharged soon.

Osaka University, which created the cell sheets, has already performed clinical trials on three patients, but this is the first time such an experiment has been conducted outside its borders.

Professor Sawa of Osaka University said that this new trial is a big step forward and he expects further development of this treatment method.

As reported by Ukrinform, the Japanese government has approved clinical trials of a method for treating spinal cord injuries using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells).
