The US Department of Commerce introduced new restrictions on exports to China under the Joe Biden administration. USA wantreduce the supply of semiconductors for the development of artificial intelligence, as well as tools for the production of chips using technology less than 14 nm. To obtain sanctions, the agency used a system that forces notified companies to obtain permission before making new exports.
AMD and NVIDIA were notified last month. Now anonymous sources have told Reuters that Lam Research Corporation, KLA Corporation and Applied Materials Inc have also received the block. Having received a notification that comes in the form of a letter, companies are automatically banned from new exportswithout prior approval from the US Department of Commerce.
Mailing is a circumvention of lengthy sanction processes that is used when quick action needs to be taken and only applies to notified companies. In addition sending letters is a clear sign of the intention of the US government to introduce wider restrictions.
