The world’s leading smart product brand OPPO’s Reno series stands out as the first smartphone series specializing in portrait photography. The OPPO Reno7 stands out for its revolutionary portrait photography technology and is supported by algorithms powered by artificial intelligence. He takes the portrait photography oriented experience to the highest level.
First smartphone with proprietary algorithms in sensor hardware
To get sharper, clearer and brighter images, it is very important that the image sensor receives sufficient light. Through extensive research into sensor technology, OPPO is exploring innovative ways to increase the light sensitivity of sensors to deliver the best quality images.
One of the ways to achieve this is to use RGBW pixel design (red, green, blue and white). OPPO used RGBW sensor designs until the R7 Plus model in 2015, which was able to increase the light sensitivity by up to 32 percent. In 2019, OPPO’s Imaging R&D team was inspired by the Quadra Binning approach, which proposes to add two white sub-pixels to each red, green and blue pixel. In this approach, each pixel can detect its own colored signals as well as the brighter full spectrum of white signals. The research team also deployed DTI (Deep Trench Insulation) technology so that each pixel can work independently without affecting the side pixels.
After three years of developing and refining RGBW technology and the work of more than 300 photography engineers, OPPO has finally achieved the breakthrough it aspired to, receiving 87 patents in the field in the process.
OPPO and Sony officially partnered in September 2019 to produce the next-generation RGBW sensor. During development, OPPO’s Imaging R&D team worked closely with chip manufacturers, including Qualcomm and MediaTek, to conduct IMX709 testing to ensure the solution’s compatibility with the best mobile SoCs. Compared to its predecessor IMX615 technology, the IMX709 has 60 percent more light-gathering capacity and delivers 35 percent less grainy images.
Explore invisible worlds
With 2MP Microlens in the Reno7 model, as well as 16.6x zoom support for videos and photos, OPPO offers new ways to maximize the photography experience and creativity of smartphones.
To offer Microlens hardware in OPPO Reno7, the added lens required more than just making room for the smartphone. During the production phase, OPPO decided to place the Microlens module on the back of the phone instead of mounting it directly on the motherboard. Due to the short focal length required for the use of microlenses, the phone must be held very close to the subjects to be photographed. For this reason, OPPO has added a new Orbital Light just below the Microlens to provide additional illumination when the Microlens is activated. OPPO’s industrial designers have made sure that the design of the Microlens and Orbit Light matches the stylish look of the OPPO Reno7 while delivering the expected shooting performance.
Powered by innovative image processing algorithms
In addition to the hardware innovations, OPPO Reno7 is equipped with innovative features such as Bokeh Bright Portrait, Selfie HDR and Artificial Intelligence Beautification Mode supported by advanced image processing algorithms. These features are seen as the new achievements of more than 10 years of R&D work in the field of image technology, to high-quality portrait photography on smartphones.
Bokeh bright portrait
The Bokeh Bright Portrait on the OPPO Reno7 offers advanced features of the previous generation to take portrait photos that are closer to those of professional DSLR cameras. OPPO’s patented artificial intelligence algorithms make the people in the shoot look brighter. With just one click, OPPO Reno7 can take portrait photos with rich bokeh highlights, just like taken with high-quality DSLR cameras.
The OPPO Imaging R&D team developed the Bokeh Bright Portrait algorithm for more than 100 scenes to improve portrait recognition and highlighting. Compared to the previous generation’s features, the new Bokeh Bright Portrait feature offers a more textured bokeh effect and better reveals skin tones, especially in images with high color saturation. These features make the people in the frame stand out more impressively against the background in portrait photos, making them the clear focus of the photo.
Selfie HDR
With OPPO Reno7’s Selfie HDR function and IMX709 sensor, it’s now easier than ever to take sharper, clearer and more natural-looking selfies, even in strong backlight conditions. Stunning selfies instantly appear on the OPPO Reno7’s screen, while several advanced algorithms work in the background to ensure it’s the best selfie image possible. The HDR algorithm uses multi-frame synthesis technology to suppress bright spots and enhance dark details in the image. In addition, there is a network of portrait algorithms in the large portrait image database to accurately identify the people in the frame. The bokeh algorithm, on the other hand, optimizes image segmentation to reduce false bokeh effects and make the edges between bokeh lights and background look natural. Other improvements are then made to the shape and color of the bokeh flares, as well as to the brightness and tone of the subject’s skin in the frame.
Artificial Intelligence Beautify Mode
With the Artificial Intelligence Beautifying Mode feature, OPPO continues to explore artificial intelligence algorithms to meet the different needs of users around the world for photo retouching. This feature uses machine learning technology developed for more than 5,000 unique facial images across 400,000 images. 393 key facial features have been identified to deliver natural beautification effects to portrait photos and videos shot with the OPPO Reno7’s front and rear cameras. Beautification effects include the removal of imperfections by artificial intelligence and custom retouching capabilities available to everyone in group photos.
Artificial Intelligence Beautifying Mode can accurately identify and erase skin blemishes, pimples, acne scars and sun spots, and intelligently retouch skin tone or makeup while keeping other desirable features intact. It can also define characteristics such as ethnicity, gender and age to provide personalized accents. A beauty panel can be created on the front camera that can adjust the skin texture and other facial features. The panel has 10 different settings and 8 detailed retouch modes for full customization.
Beautiful photos anytime, anywhere
To make it easy to take high-quality photos in any environment, OPPO continues to push the boundaries of its smartphones. Using the OPPO Image Clear Engine (ICE) built into the OPPO Reno7, Flash Snapshot captures multiple sequences of photos in ultra-short exposure photos to capture crystal-clear images even when subjects are in motion. At any time and in any environment, you don’t have to worry about blurry or out-of-focus images when you lift the OPPO Reno7 in the air and press the shutter button. In addition, the 64 MP main camera has excellent image processing capabilities. The resolution enhancement algorithm uses what is known as the VD solution. 108MP Extra can create higher resolution images thanks to sub-pixel displacements performed in multiple frames to synthesize HD images. With OPPO Reno7’s Flash Snapshot and Ultra Clear 108 MP Image features, it is possible to take great photos anytime, anywhere.
As OPPO continues to explore new possibilities in photography with its hardware and software developments, the Reno series, powered by these studies, will continue to bring more professional portrait photography experiences to users around the world.
