In Ireland, the construction of the giant battery Shannonbridge B, which will ensure the stability of the energy system in the country in the event of a power outage, has begun.

This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to Westmeath Independent.

Developed by Lumcloon Energy of Ireland and Hanwha Energy of South Korea, the new hybrid plant will for the first time combine an accumulator with a synchronous capacitor to meet the needs of the power system. Renewable energy sources – wind and solar – will be used to accumulate electricity.

Work will begin near the village of Shannonbridge, where around 150 workers will be employed. After the completion of the works, the facility will serve 15 people in approximately 2024. The cost of the project is 130 million euros.

The new grid stabilization facility will provide an additional 170 MWh of hybrid capacity to the national grid.

Irish Prime Minister Michal Martin said the government is now focused on ensuring the stability of electricity supplies to both homes and businesses.

“In recent months, the very real consequences of climate change, Russia’s immoral war against Ukraine, and Europe’s collective response have shown that urgent progress is needed in moving away from fossil fuels,” he said. “This project is an example of the infrastructure we need to help decarbonize the electricity sector and secure supply at this critical time.”
