Chrome’s sidebar will expand its functionality to include search and web content

Like anyone far above the rest, Chrome has had trouble recognizing and responding to reality, but it has. Google’s web browser has long since woken up from its lethargy and implemented a number of functions of greater or lesser importance, including Side panel which has become standard in modern web browsers.

The sidebar is standard in modern web browsers, not Chrome’s own implementation, which is actually one of the weakest you can find. But it starts with something, and if first the old Opera, then the new one, then Vivaldi, Firefox and even Microsoft Edge elevated the sidebar to the category of the basic function of a web browser, Chrome cannot be less.

So it’s been a month since Chroem deployed its brand new sidebar in the stable version of the browser for PC, where you can currently view your bookmarks and reading list. But as users of other browsers know very well, and also at Google, the sidebar can do much more. And they are at it, even if, as they say, palace things go slowly.

As mentioned in Neowin for example, one of the new features waiting for the Chrome sidebar is the ability to search for highlighted text in the sidebar or rather display highlighted text search results on the panel. This means that you select text on a page, use the context menu option to search for it, but instead of opening a tab, the results appear in the sidebar.

The feature is really convenient and it’s actually not born out of nowhere, but it’s o tracing already present in Microsoft Edge that yes, it doesn’t seem like it will be released tomorrow in the stable version of Chrome, given that it can only be tested in the Canary version, only after activating the hidden advanced option and only for some users: there are those who have tried without success.

However, the option in question is linked to others that are much more interesting for the practical future of the Chrome sidebar. Like the one titled “Sidebar web view» and is described as «Adds a sidebar option to load any web content with a URL bar». In other words, a much more attractive feature should come after the search: like in other browsers, put the desired web page in the sidebar of Chrome.
