The Department of Airspace Management (Decea), an agency associated with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), carried out operational changes at Cumbica Airport in Guarulhos. This happened as a result of changes in the Earth’s magnetic field..

The airport’s two runways had to be redesigned to accommodate the changes. The change introduced by Decea concerns track numbering. This is because they use compasses to be able to navigate in which direction they need to position planes in order to stay in line with the runway.

At all airports, runways are numbered from 01 to 36. They are painted at the ends of the runway and serve as a guide for pilots. These numbers represent the angle that the aircraft’s magnetic compass should mark, divided by ten.

Also, the last number is always discarded if it’s zero, or rounded up if it’s greater than five. So a clue that shows the compass at 090 is considered 09. Meanwhile, when the compass shows a number like 177, it becomes 18.

At the airport in question, the runways are numbered 27 and 09 at the beginning, to which are added the letters L (left in Portuguese) and R (right in Portuguese). With the change, Decea said the tracks would be 10L/28R and 10R/28L.

Currently, if an airport has two or more thresholds, they are marked with the letters L or R. In addition, if there is a third runway, the concessionaire paints one of the runways with the letter C, indicating the center (centre, in Portuguese).

The airport authority, GRU Airport, says this is the first time this has happened. Opened in 1985, Kumbika Airport has not yet undergone such changes due to a delay in this type of phenomenon.

According to the FAB, this change in the magnetic field “occurs slowly and changes by an average of one degree every ten years.” The concessionaire will now need to repaint all the numbers on the airport’s runway thresholds, as well as change navigation documents, traffic information systems and ground signs.
