Scientists say the region is rich in heat-producing elements such as uranium, thorium and potassium, which are responsible for supporting the ongoing volcanic activity of the moon.

“Therefore, the study of basalt massif thickness and volcanic mass flow velocity during eruptions at the Chanye-5 landing site will contribute to further progress in understanding the processes of volcanic activity on the Moon and the thermal evolution history within it,” he said. To answer these questions, experts from the National Space Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other Chinese institutions conducted a study of the thickness of basalt layers in the region where the Chanye-5 probe landed. At least four volcanic eruptions have occurred here, leaving behind four layers with median thicknesses of 230 meters, 70 meters, 4 meters and 36 meters, respectively.

At the same time, the flow rate of basalt lava eruption in the Chanye-5 landing site region increased significantly about 2 billion years ago, according to the study.

“The results are expected to provide new constraints on existing models of thermochemical and kinetic processes on the Moon, thereby providing strong evidence to explain the duration and scale of volcanic activity on the Moon,” Du Jun said. Said.
