AMD introduced the first Ryzen 7020 Mendocino processors for laptops, targeting a completely different audience than desktop chips. The Ryzen 7020 is positioned as a budget series designed to boost the performance of entry-level portable computers. The chip configuration includes processor cores based on legacy Zen 2 architecture (modernized and optimized for TSMC’s new 6nm process), RDNA 2 graphics (Radeon 610M) and LPDDR5 memory support.
A total of three processor models are offered: Ryzen 5 7520U, Ryzen 3 7320U and Athlon Gold 7220U. The 4-core and 8-thread Ryzen 5 7520U has a frequency of 2.8 GHz at base and 4.3 GHz in Boost mode. It has 6 MB cache and integrated Radeon 610M graphics. The Ryzen 3 7320U offers the same specs, but at a lower frequency: 2.4 and 4.1 GHz respectively. Especially budget buyers can choose the dual-core Athlon Gold 7220U with a base frequency of 2.4 GHz and a maximum of 3.7 GHz. It has 5 MB cache and Radeon 610M graphics card. TDP of all three processors is 15 W.
Other features include two 32-bit memory channels supporting up to 32GB LPD DR5 and the latest VCN 3.0 video decoding engine using AV1 and VP9 codecs. In terms of I/O interfaces, the new AMD Mendocino processors are equipped with two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, two USB 2.0, one USB 2.0 for SBIO, and four GPP PCIe Gen It supports . 3.0 lane. This is very similar to the AMD configuration used in the Van Gogh single-chip system for the Steam Deck handheld. The company promises more than 12 hours of battery life for laptops based on the new processors.
The first laptops based on the new Ryzen and Athlon processor series will be available in the fourth quarter of this year with prices starting at $399. Acer, HP and Lenovo are already preparing their devices.
