University Entrepreneurs Prepare to Establish Turkey’s First Hyperloop Company

Yeditepe University Automotive Club hyperloop team took second place in the Hyperloop (high-performance off-rail fast transport vehicle) Development Competition, held for the first time this year in collaboration with TEKNOFEST and TÜBİTAK, with the vehicle they named Hyperhawk ‘E- 7 Infinity’. The team captain of the team, Barbaros Efe, a graduate of Yeditepe University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, said: “There are about 10 companies operating in the hyperloop field in the world. We also want to establish a hyperloop company that will represent Turkey, and we started working on that.”

In the hyperloop technology, which was first started in 2016 by an Elon Musk company, the intention is that the trains move through the airless tunnel without touching the rails and the ground, by suspending them in different ways. and use different propulsion systems. So it is intended that the vehicle will reach twice the speed of aircraft as there is no air resistance and frictional force. The Hyperhawk team, which continues its activities within the Yeditepe University Automotive Club, which was selected as the 2nd of 56 university teams in the TEKNOFEST BLACK ‘Hyperloop Development Competition’, said they aim to present this technology to all of Turkey by starting to working on the founding point of Yeditepe University.

In addition, the team received the special jury prize from TÜBİTAK RUTE as the first team to pass the technical checks in the longest hyperloop tunnels in Europe in one go and in the shortest possible time.

“We were 11th in Europe in the competition in London”

Barbaros Efe, the captain of the 23-man Hyperhawk team, stated that as Yeditepe University Automotive Club they are not only working on hyperloop technology: “We participate in competitions such as electric cars, electric autonomous cars, unmanned aerial vehicles and hyperloop capsules. “We also participate in international competitions. The last time we entered a competition in London. In this competition we were ranked 11th in Europe among the most prestigious universities in the world.”

“In 10 years we will see Hyperloop technology around the world”

Efe stated that Hyperloop technology is a technology that is currently making a lot of noise in the world, saying, “Hyperloop ranks fifth as tapray technology, next to air, land, sea and rail systems, as tapray technology. A system called advanced The first tests of this system were done in 2016 in the Nevada desert by Elon Musk’s company, and they aim to reach 1200 kilometers per hour with this system.Hyperloop technology is a technology that is making a lot of noise in the world and we will see this technology all over the world in 10 years.Turkey also has a great advantage in this regard because TUBITAK RUTE (Rail Transportation Technologies Institute) built the world’s second longest tunnel of 208 meters.

“We want to be one of the leading companies in the world”

Efe said: “If the Istanbul-Ankara line is set up with Hyperloop technology, transportation between the two cities will be provided in about half an hour. I must say that we did not participate in this organization only to compete. number of hyperloop companies in the world does not reach 10. We want to establish Hyperloop company that will represent Turkey. With the support of İSTEK Foundation and Yeditepe University Founder and Honorary President Bedrettin Dalan and President of the İSTEK Education Board Barış Dalan, we have started our work on this issue, we are considering starting our own hyperloop company in about 1-2 months and we want to be among the leading companies in the world.”

“We were the first competitor to enter the tunnel”

Eray Çobanoğlu, member of the Hyperhawk team and head of the Automotive Club of the university, emphasizing that they have completed the competition as the second of the 56 universities in Turkey and said: “Here we create a magnetic impact force on an aluminum rail with magnetic levitation, and our capsule can reach very high speeds because there is no friction in this tunnel. As we said before, if a tunnel is built between Istanbul and Ankara, we can cover this distance in 25-30 minutes with the hyperloop- capsule. This is currently being worked on. In fact, as Yeditepe University we were the pioneers in this. At that time we were working and we were the first competitors to make history and go into the tunnel.”

“We can see Hyperloop technology in our country”

Çobanoğlu said that Hyperloop technology can also come to Turkey: “As we have already mentioned, we aim to offer this technology to all our people by working at the time of its foundation within the scope of the university. With this competition, we have we won a very nice prize. We spend the support we get from here to use it effectively for better competitions and better projects. We are always open to future projects. We are working here on the technology of the future and like you see we did very well.”
