Overwatch 2 will require a phone number to play

Activision Blizzard has confirmed that in order to play Overwatch 2 we will need a phone number that must be linked to our Battle.net account and that it will work as a disaster recovery mechanism. This way, all users who play this new part will have the two-step verification system activated.

According to the company, this method of verification is necessary for account security and is ultimately beneficial to players. I can confirm that this is absolutely true. and that finally, two-step verification is an extra layer of protection that we appreciate in case someone tries to compromise our account. However, I can understand that making it “compulsory” is something that may not appeal to everyone.

In addition, Activision Blizzard has also confirmed that it will introduce what is known as “First Time User Experience” or FTUE for its acronym in English, which is basically training period for new players, a sort of “wall” that prevents them from using competitive game modes until they pass this period. FTUE will be very simple, we will have to play 50 quick games in order to unlock competitive mode. This should give us “minimum” training and prepare us for the mentioned regime.

If we want to unlock the entire cast of characters we will have to play about 100 competitive gameswhich means that Overwatch 2 will require some effort on the part of the player, which I honestly don’t see as a problem, since it is ultimately a way to revive the “grind” process and allow us to improve our skills.

Overwatch 2 will launch on October 4, i.e. in a few days, and will arrive on PC as well as Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox Series XS and PS5. As we told you yesterday, the PC version will no longer be limited to 360 frames per second, which means that it will be ready to take full advantage of the power of the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40.
