Pushing the boundaries in aerodynamic testing, AMD EPYC™ processors deliver a 20 percent performance boost for eight-time champion Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team

AMD has announced new details of its partnership with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, which will increase aerodynamic testing capacity and help the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team win its eighth Constructors’ Championship at the end of the 2021 racing season. of AMD EPYC processors, the team was able to achieve a 20 percent performance improvement for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) workloads used to model and test the aerodynamic flow of F1 vehicles.

“We are proud to partner with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team, a highly respected F1 team operating at the intersection of racing and technology,” said Dan McNamara, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Server Business Unit, AMD. For F1 teams, having the most effective computational analysis of aerodynamics means the difference between winning and losing a race. “With AMD EPYC processors offering faster computers at a lower cost than the previous supplier, the Mercedes-AMG F1 team will be as competitive as possible on the track and in the data center.”

Simon Williams, Head of Aero Development Software at Mercedes-AMG, said: “AMD EPYC processors are highly reliable and provide us with a platform that delivers the highest possible level of aerodynamic performance to achieve our goal of faster iterative performance. We achieved a 20 percent performance improvement over our previous system, cutting our CFD workload in half. This is a big step up from our previous gains of one or two percent,” he continued.

• AMD EPYC processors offer a 20 percent performance improvement for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) workloads compared to the team’s previous server.

• Using AMD EPYC processors, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team is pushing the boundaries of what is possible with CFD by developing groundbreaking aerodynamics while delivering the price-performance ratio needed to meet the budget rules imposed by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

AMD and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team have announced a multi-year partnership, first in 2020, combining the two companies’ passion for high performance. To learn more about the work of AMD and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, please visit this link.
