This Tuesday (27) all attention was focused on the announcement of the new generation of processors. 13th Generation Intel Core Raptor Lake. However, at the same event, the company demonstrated another surprise: a retractable portable screen that looks like it’s straight out of the best sci-fi movies.

Developed with Samsung, the display prototype has a slider mechanism that allows you to increase or decrease the screen size according to user’s need. In the initial configuration, the device is similar in size to a tablet like iPad, with a diagonal of 13 inches.

By pushing the frame aside, the user can practically turn it into a portable monitor, reaching a size of 17 inches.

OLED innovation of the future

As an Intel guest at yesterday’s event, Samsung Display CEO J.S. Choi stated that this was the announcement of the first 17-inch retractable PC display. According to the manager, this invention relates to satisfy those who want to combine large screens with portability your devices.

He also emphasized the importance of collaboration for Samsung, which is always looking for partners to develop new software and hardware. Clearly flustered, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger asked to test the new “toy”, telling the audience it was “a showcase of what’s possible with an OLED panel and a flexible plastic substrate.”

JS Choi even joked that the time for folding screens is “gone” and that sliding screens are the future. But, despite the chuckles, he pointed out that this is only the beginning of the sliding technology, which has long way to market.

It is worth noting that Samsung has been working on the technology for several years, showing off the first prototype in 2021. The announced date places it between the end of Phase 5 and the start of Phase 6.
