The Ryzen 7000 debuted a month ago. AMD filed early, leaving a significant margin until the embargo was lifted, allowing us to publish our review of the Ryzen 9 7900X and Ryzen 5 7600X just a few days ago. The wait was long, but In the end, I think it was worth it.
With the Ryzen 7000 in AMD, they showed it for the third time his bet on MCM design was not a mistakeand they did it with four big keys:
- A remarkable increase in single-wire performance, due to both an increase in IPC and a large increase in operating frequencies.
- It broke the 5GHz barrier, which seemed impossible for the MCM design.
- It also managed to implement the two most advanced nodes that exist, 5nm at the CPU level and 6nm at the GPU-I/O level.
- It created a next-generation platform with support for DDR5 and PCIe Gen5.
It is true that the Ryzen 7000 they are not perfect. Compared to the Ryzen 5000 series, they are more expensive, generate more heat and have higher consumption, but in the end this is all compensated with a significant increase in performance and with a state-of-the-art platform that is ready to work with all the standards that are called upon to define the present and the future of the sector.
The issue of increasing IPC in Ryzen 7000 deserves a special mention, and it is AMD doesn’t have it easy at all. Ryzen 5000 has already “exhausted” the “simplest” modifications that could offer the biggest changes in terms of performance, such as breaking the division of the CCD unit into two CCX units, which allowed access to each block of eight cores. double the L3 cache (32 MB total).
Regardless, AMD nailed it 13% CPI increase compared to the previous generation and an increase in single-wire power that can reach 29% if we take into account the increase in frequencies, that is, if we talk about raw power. Impressive for a single generational leap.
Ryzen 7000 is another example of the potential of MCM design and AMD’s good work in this regard.
