The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope photographed the interacting pair of galaxies known as Arp-Madore 608-333 using the Advanced Camera for Surveys.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by the observatory.

The interacting galaxies Arp-Madore 608-333 were imaged as part of an effort to build an archive of interesting targets for further study in the future with Hubble, ground-based telescopes and the James Webb Space Telescope. To create such an archive, astronomers scoured existing astronomical catalogs to find a list of targets scattered across the night sky.

The scientists hoped to include in the archive objects previously identified as interesting and easily observable by Hubble no matter which direction they were oriented.

Timing a Hubble observation is a long and complex process, and observations are spaced to use every last available second of Hubble time.

However, there is a small but constant time frame (about 2-3%) that is not used when Hubble returns to targeting new objects. That’s what snapshot apps are for, like those taken by the Arp-Madore 608-333. In addition to creating beautiful images, these programs allow astronomers to collect as much data as possible with Hubble.

As Ukrinform reports, the NASA/ESA Hubble space telescope photographed spiral galaxy NGC 5495 in the constellation Hydra with its Wide Field Camera 3 camera.
