The EU Parliament voted to adopt USB-C as the single port for chargers across a wide range of electronics. This was reported by MacRumors. Parliament’s decision must be implemented by all electronics manufacturers represented in EU countries by the end of 2024.
Based on this, Apple will have to abandon the use of the Lightning port on iPhone, AirPods and other devices. The preservation of alternative connection standards will be possible only on one condition – Apple or any company that decides to abandon the accepted standard must provide evidence in favor of the impossibility of using USB-C in their devices.
In the EU Parliament vote, USB-C received 602 “for” and 13 “against” votes. The EU is confident that the transition to a single standard will reduce the amount of electronic waste, increase the lifetime of gadgets, and also make their work easier.
