The Japanese company Kioxia, known worldwide as the NAND Flash memory division of Toshiba, has developed a Prototype 2TB microSDXC cardhuge capacity for a storage solution that without any doubt marks an important turning point in the sector.

This Kioxia product is nothing but a natural response to a very simple reality, our digital lives weigh more and more, which is why we need a higher capacity storage solution. microSDXC cards are the perfect accessory increase the storage capacity of many mobile devices, including everything from smartphones to cameras, tablets, media players and even small laptops.

To better understand what this means we should give it some context. Just ten years ago, the top-of-the-range smartphones that hit the market were configured with 8 GB of storage capacity, and external storage solutions had limited capacity, measured in hundreds of MB or a few GB, depending on the model and the specific time.

Today, just ten years later, Kioxia has managed to create a microSDXC drive with a whopping 2TB, meaning the Japanese company has integrated 2048GB of storage on a card small enough to fit on your fingertips. Impressive, no doubt. This achievement was possible thanks to the use of BiCS 3D NAND Flash memory (stacked in 3D) and a Japanese company’s controller. A total of 16 terabit chips have been stacked to achieve these 2 terabytes of capacity, and the overall thickness of this memory card is just 0.8 mm.

We do not yet have details on its possible price for sale, although it is clear that since this is a high-capacity and small-scale solution, it will be quite high. In any case, we can be sure that it will become a very popular option, especially for those professionals who need to have high storage capacity in their digital devices and tools, as well as those who consumers who want to take their digital lives with them.

Mass production of Kioxia’s first 2TB microSDXC cards is expected to begin sometime in 2023, so their launch could come sometime this year. There’s nothing concrete yet, but given that it’s in the prototype stage and has yet to go through that series production stage, I think we can expect launch in the second half of 2023.
