Radar that fines noisy cars arrives in Brazil

The city of Curitiba has begun testing noise monitoring using radar. The capital of Paraná was the first in Brazil to receive this type of equipment, which was first introduced in France and aimed at reducing excessive noise generated by exhaust systems installed on cars and motorcycles..

Developed by Perkons and the Road Traffic Authority (Setran), it is installed on Victor Ferreira do Amaral Avenue, in the Taruma area.. Installed together with a high-speed radar, it can automatically capture and collect images and sound from vehicles that emit a sound higher than allowed by law.

Curitiba traffic superintendent Rosangela Battistella said action against excessive noise in vehicles comes from the public itself. The request has been passed on to the city council, which will apply stricter measures regarding noise from cars and motorcycles.

“Based on information about the behavioral profiles of these drivers, we will be able to determine the time of the largest incident and the type of vehicle so that we can conduct educational work, as well as conduct inspections,” Rosangela said.

The device still cannot apply the penalty

Although noise-capturing technology is already in use in Curitiba, it cannot yet be used to issue fines.. This requires the approval of the National Institute of Metrology, Inmetro, as well as bodies such as the National Road Traffic Council (Contran) and the National Council for the Environment (Conama).

The noise radar installed in Curitiba, with the ability to receive corrections, will pick up the sounds and images of vehicles that emit noise above 90 decibels. Since there is no permit for a fine, the mayor’s office of the capital of Parana did not say what it would do with cars that fell on the radar.

It is important to remember that although it does not have the authority to issue a fine, Contran introduced a resolution in 2016 that allows cars with a loud sound outside to be fined. The violation is considered serious and results in the loss of five points from the portfolio, as well as a fine of 195.23 reais.

“The use in vehicles of any type of equipment that emits a sound audible from the outside, regardless of volume or frequency, that violates public order, on land roads open to traffic is prohibited,” the text of Resolution No. 624 says.
