It seems Windows 11 22H2 It didn’t start off on the best foot. After the NVIDIA driver was found to be causing the problems, Microsoft has now confirmed performance degradation when copying large files.

According to Ned Pyle, principal program manager in the Windows Server Engineering Group, users may experience Windows 11 22H2 (or Windows 11 2022 Update) and Up to 40% performance loss when copying a multi-gigabyte file over SMB, more specifically in the reading process. Pyle himself said that they did not detect the problem in previous versions of the operating system.

However, it is important to note that SMB usage is only the main scenario where Microsoft as a company sees a performance issue also found cases when performing a local copy and paste processon the same computer (not necessarily on the same drive).

Microsoft is currently investigating the origin of the bug to develop an appropriate patch to resolve it. Meantime, the company recommends using robocopy either xcopy with a parameter /J restore lost performance.

The Redmond-based giant seems to have hit more hurdles than it wants with Windows 11 22H2, which is perhaps a little annoying considering its next-gen operating system has been around for a while. On the other hand, Windows 10 has gotten used to this dynamic.

Despite the significant performance issue, copying and pasting large amounts of data or large files is not something that is done every day, or at least for most regular users, so in the background this failure may go unnoticed by many people.
