The American multinational company Micron will spend up to $100 billion over the next two decades to build a new computer chip manufacturing plant in New York.
As reported by Ukrinform, CNBC reports it.
The announcement of the investment in the facility followed the enactment of the federal CHIPS and Science Act, which provided $52 billion to spur increased domestic semiconductor production.
The risks associated with the US reliance on foreign production of computer chips became apparent during the coronavirus pandemic as supply chain issues affected a wide variety of goods.
Semiconductors are used in a variety of Internet-connected devices, from cell phones to automobiles and medical devices.
The New York governor’s office said the Micron factory will create an average of 50,000 jobs per year in the state during its first 31-year operating period, according to an economic impact study.
As reported by Ukrinform, the US is considering the possibility of limiting the supply of equipment for chip production in China, including NAND memory chips manufactured by the Chinese company YMTC.
