Japanese electronics giant Sony has developed a device that tests a person’s sense of smell.
As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by NHK.
Sony said this device can produce 40 different scents. It instantly emits a scent chosen by the operator in a special application. Subjects also use the app to indicate that they are considering the scent.
Usually, to test their sense of smell, subjects are asked to smell a piece of paper dipped in a scented liquid.
However, this requires the creation of special conditions to prevent odor leakage, which can affect the result. The new device is securely sealed and has deodorizing functions, so it does not require a special room for its use.
Even in the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic, the need to test the ability to smell is growing. In some cases, people who contract COVID-19 may have problems with their sense of smell.
The company hopes the device will one day be used by medical facilities, as assessing the ability to smell can aid in the early detection of dementia.
As Ukrinform reports, a group of Chinese scientists from Tongji University has developed a mask that can detect virus infection in 10 minutes.
