Canadian major food retail chain Loblaws has started delivering unmanned products from warehouses to its stores.

As Ukrinform reports, the project was implemented in collaboration with the American startup Gatik, as CBC News wrote.

It was noted that the self-driving trucks with a climate control system in their bodies will move between Loblaws locations around Toronto. A similar project is being implemented for the first time in Canada. Although the cars can move fully autonomously, for the first time there will be a person in the passenger seat in the cabin.

Loblaws and Gatik’s pilot project has been underway since 2020, and since then the self-driving trucks have made 150,000 trips without a single incident. But during this time, there was always an operator behind the wheel of the cars who could take control if needed.

While the ultimate goal of the project is to initiate fully autonomous delivery of goods from stores to customers, self-driving cars will only travel between Loblaws’ own locations.

The Loblaws chain in Canada includes more than 2,400 retail outlets.
