Oldweb: how to view old sites and go back in time

What year did you start surfing the Internet? Those who were able to access the World Wide Web in the 1990s went through many classic versions of the old websites – small or large – that are completely different now.

Because you can travel back in time and find out what famous sites looked like in the past. This is a proposal from Oldweb, a free and open source website whose main idea is to serve as a kind of “internet museum” by keeping old and active versions of web pages.

How to browse old sites with Oldweb

There is no need to install any programs. Oldweb is a free online service that allows the user to search for URLs and see how the pages were styled at the time. The content has been archived since 1996 – thus more than 25 years of history. See how to access the service.

Step 1. Go to the Oldweb site – for best results use your PC browser.

Step 2 Select the time browser in the left corner of the screen. Some pages are not available today because they require plugins that are not compatible with current technologies. What Oldweb does is emulate these browser versions so that content can load.

Step 3 Then enter the desired URL in the appropriate field.

Step 4 Check the “Browser archives to” option and set the date following the pattern [ano-mês-dia].

Step 5 Click “Download” or “Restart” and wait.

Pages will be displayed in an emulated version of the browser. There will not always be specific content for the selected day, and in such cases, a page with an approximate date is displayed.

Adrenaline look laaaa in 2002

Note, for example, that when searching site version Adrenaline dated 01/01/2002 we see the page dated 12/16/2001. At the time, besides a completely different look, the main highlights were reviews of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Harry Potter.

The content listed on Oldweb is possible thanks to repositories such as the Internet Archive or the Portuguese Web Archive, among others. It is worth remembering that not all existing sites are available for viewing. It is likely that a lot of alternative content has been lost in the vast digital sea, leaving only large pages as milestones of a bygone era.

Also do not notice slow page loading. First, remember that pages have taken longer to load in the past, so the extra load time is part of the experience. In addition, all content is executed through browser emulators, which contributes to faster response times.
