Macrumors has listed the four main innovations of the next-generation Apple TV set-top box, which should launch this fall. In May, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the new Apple TV will launch in the second half of 2022. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also said last month that a new Apple TV is imminent and could hit the market this year.

The next-generation Apple TV will be equipped with the Apple A14 Bionic SoC, which is also found in all fourth-generation iPhone 12 and iPad Air models. The upgraded chip will provide higher performance in apps and games compared to the current Apple TV 4K with the A12 Bionic chip.

Also, the set-top box will get 4GB of RAM compared to the 3GB on the Apple TV 4K. Increasing the amount of RAM will help increase productivity and responsiveness. A code-level reference to a new, unreleased version of Siri Remote for Apple TV was discovered in the iOS 16 beta. It’s unclear what new features the updated remote will have, but many customers hope to integrate the U1 chip to support Find My.

The new Apple TV set-top box may cost less than its predecessor. The current Apple TV 4K model starts at $179 with 32GB of storage, while the older Apple TV HD model is available for $149. By comparison, there are plenty of streaming sticks from brands like Chromecast and Roku that range from $25 to $50. Apple TV 4K was announced in April 2021. Gurman believes an Apple press conference in October is unlikely, so the new Apple TV set-top box will likely be announced in a press release.
