According to Mark Gurman Bloomberg, all three AirPod models, and Mac accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad will likely switch to USB-C by 2024. Earlier this week, the European Parliament approved a new directive that forces manufacturers to introduce USB-C as a common charging port for many devices in Europe by the end of 2024. In the latest Power On bulletin, Gurman said that Apple is preparing to make changes to its devices to meet these new regulatory requirements.
Gürman believes that with most of Apple’s products, the legislation will get ahead of the implementation date at the end of 2024. The iPhone 15 will surpass EU mandate by one year, he said, by getting a USB-C port in the fall of 2023. The entry-level iPad, the only ‌iPad‌ with a Lightning connector, will switch to USB-C by the end of this year.
Gurman suggested that if Apple releases a new iPhone SE model with a Lightning port instead of a USB-C port in March 2024, it will comply with EU law as it will be released before the end of the year, but no new ‌iPhone SE‌ models will be released. Released in 2025 or 2026, it should have USB-C.
Gurman noted that all AirPods models, as well as Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, should be replaced when new versions are released. He expects several major Mac updates next year, including a new iMac and Mac Pro, and “one can assume that this move will coincide with accessory updates,” he said.
Despite the move to USB-C in Apple’s product family, Gurman said he thinks the USB-C era will be much shorter than the 30-pin iPod or Lightning, “at least for Apple’s mobile devices.” The iPod and Lightning connectors were on new Apple devices for about 11 years before they were manufactured, and Gurman still believes that “Apple’s future is in wireless networks, and some versions of the AirPower dream that was canceled from 2017 will still come true – well over a decade ago.” He added that “at some point in the next few years” Apple will begin a full transition to inductive charging on iPhones and iPads, largely exempting devices from EU laws requiring the inclusion of a USB-C port.
