An article published by Aerospace magazine this week showed companies are starting to work with the ability to create giant ads in the sky.. Researchers from the Skoltech Institute of Technology in Moscow and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology have calculated how many satellites would be needed for mass propaganda in space.

According to the result presented in the study, it is necessary to place about 50 satellites in orbit so that they can transmit images that could be seen from Earth. As a result, companies that want to run this type of ad have to pull the scorpion out of their pocket and pay around $65 million. The amount corresponds to approximately 338 million reais, according to current quotations.

50 satellites could generate advertisements in space and visible from Earth

The researchers call the new advertising technique “space advertising.” However, the process to make this work will not be as simple as advertising done in the more traditional way today.

This is because it would be necessary to send a fairly large constellation of satellites to be able to reflect light and make the projected images visible from Earth. The CubeSat satellite, for example, would need a solar reflector of about 350 square feet, equivalent to 32 square meters, to capture the necessary and sufficient light, which would be converted into never-before-seen advertising.

“We’ve been looking into some of the more technical aspects of space advertising for some time now. This time we looked at the economic side of the matter and, no matter how unrealistic it may seem, showed that space advertising based on 50 or more small satellites, flights in formation can be economically profitable,” said first author Shamil Biktimirov.

Cost and Campaign Barrier

Now the question is whether this type of advertising will be profitable and profitable for brands that would like to take risks in how they bring the product to the consumer. Thus, companies will need to think about some conditions in order for the ad to work. First, this could only be done between sunrise and sunset, as the plates need light to be seen from Earth. In addition, there is a possibility that clouds will form that prevent people from viewing content.

Sending lots of new satellites into space could also irritate some astronomers. This is because they claim that a very large number of objects in space can significantly impair observations made from Earth.

Continuation after commercial

The team responsible for publishing the article took the opportunity to figure out how much to invest in order to launch a live space advertising campaign. A 91-day ad would cost the corporate treasury $111 million, he said. This figure corresponds to approximately 577 million reais at the current dollar exchange rate.
