A group of criminals used a DJI Mini drone to rob an ATM in Reims., in France. According to the police, the bandits took about 147,000 US dollars, which is equivalent to 765,000 reais. Investigators managed to reach the bandits, detain them and return the stolen amount.
In a crime reminiscent of Danny Ocean’s actions in Eleven Men, Le Journal De Dimanche reported that the crime took place in May, but the case was only closed in recent weeks. With no signs of forced entry or vandalism, the police noticed that the ventilation duct near the bank had been damaged.
However, the premises were too small to accommodate one person, and investigators had to start working to try to figure out what had happened there. After analyzing footage from surveillance cameras, they noticed the presence of a drone in the air duct, which is believed to be a model of the DJI Mini line. Remote controlled, it was used to open the door of the technical room next to the ATM.
“Several strangers entered this room and managed to open the cash register by entering a secret code that is usually known only to those in charge and those responsible for transporting money,” the police told Le Journal De Dimanche.
Despite all the work the drone has done to give criminals access to the room, it will not be able to offer the bad guys the codes they need. To do this, they were helped by a former technician who had access to the code.
A source close to the newspaper said it was the first time they were working on a case involving a drone used to rob a bank. Investigators said the entire robbery took about 10 minutes, having shown dexterity and preparation in drawing up the plan.
Even taking into account the fact that the crime was committed in May of this year, it took time for the case to gain resonance. However, this only became known when the Reims prosecutor scheduled a press conference to provide more details on the case.
