The mission of the American space agency NASA to protect planet Earth, in which the probe deliberately collided with the asteroid Dimorphos, showed a successful result – the asteroid changed its orbit.
NASA announced this on Monday, according to Ukrinform reports.
“Analysis of data over the past two weeks by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) research team has confirmed that the spacecraft’s kinetic impact with the target – the asteroid Dimorphos – has successfully changed the asteroid’s trajectory,” the space agency said.
Thus, this mission was the first time humanity had deliberately altered the motion of a celestial body, and it was the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.
As reported by Ukrinform, the mission began on November 24, when NASA, together with SpaceX, successfully launched a Falcon 9 carrier rocket into space with a DART instrument. The probe flew to the target on September 26 and was deliberately aimed at a celestial body. This was a test of the world’s first planetary defense system, designed to prevent possible collisions of meteorites and asteroids with Earth.
