South Korean company Samsung is investigating cases of unintentional swelling of batteries in its smartphones and has launched an investigation, Gizchina portal reported.
Earlier, popular British techno blogger Arun Maini noticed that the batteries in Samsung smartphones stored in his collection were starting to explode. He contacted other bloggers who said they faced a similar issue when using their Samsung gadgets. Subscribers of bloggers also reported similar cases.
Samsung representative Chris Langlois confirmed that the company is aware of this and is investigating.
iFixit representative Arthur Shea urged users experiencing battery swelling not to worry. He explained that battery swelling in itself is not dangerous, as it is a kind of protective mechanism to trap volatile gases. “The battery actually expands a bit every time you charge it,” Shi said. But he warned that the danger lies precisely in charging such a battery, which could lead to even greater swelling and explosion.
Aruna Maini estimates that the battery swelling issue could theoretically affect more than 250 million Samsung users.
