Suspicious links and attachments – how not to become a cyber victim

State Private Communications reminds us of the simple security rules on the internet once again. Messages with attachments and links are the easiest way to spread malware or redirect a user to a malicious site that steals personal data.

Criminals can send such messages to e-mail, private messages and messengers on social networks, SMS, chats, etc. can send.

A post with a link to the scam site can even be posted to a local newsgroup or newsgroup. In such cases, speculation is often used about so-called state social payments for internally displaced persons and Ukrainians who suffered during the war.

Therefore, we remind you once again:

1. Trust only information from officially verified sources:

  • verified pages of state authorities in social networks (with a blue tick);
  • Websites of government officials whose addresses must end in “gov.ua”.

2. Carefully check the recipient and the content of the messages

  • do not follow links or download files from strangers;
  • check the information received in the message in other sources and on the official pages of state bodies.

3. Do not enter any personal data if you are not sure that the site is secure. Also note that https at the beginning of the site address indicates a secure connection, http – indicates not secure (your data and even passwords can be stolen).

4. Only download licensed software and applications from official developer sites.

5. Do not download pirated copies of programs. You’d better find a free licensed alternative.

6. If you want to use a chatbot, check using botchecker.

7. We also recommend following CERT-UA messages about distribution of SMPs and online fraud.
