ESnet is a computer network of researchers at the US Department of Energy. It was originally created in 1986 for the exchange of scientific results, and the priority of this network has always been speed, because the results of experiments in physics and energy are quite voluminous. The network is constantly being updated, totaling 1.1 exabytes (10) in 2011.18) data.
As a result of another modernization, the transmission rate from it increased to 46 Tbit/s (1012). For comparison, the maximum speed of a typical Ethernet cable is from 10 to several tens of gigabits per second, and user Internet tariffs – up to a hundred or two megabits. Physically, this network consists of 24,000 km of special fiber optic cables.
This is a speed record among real networks, but not absolute. In Japan, the transmission rate is 1 petabit (1015).
