Our readers speak: Has video game development stalled too much?

I’ve noticed this for years deepening stagnation in the development of video games, not only from a technical point of view, but also on a playable and narrative level. All this made me come back more and more to enjoy the retro titles I played many years ago and left me in a state of slight exhaustion that only broke at different times with some very specific titles like the first part of The Division , Cyberpunk 2077, Shenmue III and Fallout 4.

video game development They are still mostly anchored in a corridor sandbox concept with repetitive missions which lead us to get fed up and which eventually create a linearity that is difficult to break unless the game is equipped with something particularly attractive, such as a unique environment (The Division), a sublime technical section (Cyberpunk 2077 ), a story and first-class gameplay (Shuenmue III) or a more open approach focused on exploration and full of surprises to discover (Fallout 4).

When analyzing the GeForce RTX 4090, I could not help myself from this situation again, namely the software does not progress to the hardware level, and this ends up being a very serious problem. That a graphics card like this has CPU bottlenecks even at 4K depending on the game being used is a clear sign of this and a clear example of what developers have to deal with.

This is not the first time this has happened, in fact it has happened repeatedly in recent years. Without going any further, I remember that Battlefield 2042 also suffered from a major bottleneck with the GeForce RTX 3080 Tieven at 1440p settings and with maximum ray tracing and same goes for Halo Infinite.

The video games we enjoy on PC are developed starting from the base of the cantilevers that indicate the minimum base, that’s a fact and that’s what caused these bottlenecks. It’s a topic that I’ve commented on many times before and that our regular readers know perfectly well. Now that we’ve started the transition to PS5 and Xbox Series XS, the use of six-core and twelve-thread CPUs is becoming a reality, although there’s still a lot of room for improvement.

Now that the GeForce RTX 4090 has hit the market, and that Both PS5 and Xbox Series X are already showing clear signs of exhaustion, I can’t help but worry about what’s in store for us PC users in the coming years and the impact that this stagnation of video games will have on hardware usage, as it’s not something that’s limited to the most prominent, but even affects the levels, which would once have seemed unimaginable to us.

We’ll see how the situation develops, but that’s clear to me exclusive game development for P should returnC that really use the potential of this platform. I know it’s not cost effective for developers and there are many vested interests that influence this issue and ultimately prevent important improvements in PC gaming from leaving consoles for bad, we’ve seen this on many occasions but it’s the only viable way to overcome this stagnation.

Now it’s your turn, are you concerned that video game development is stagnating and that consoles continue to absolutely set the pace? Read in the comments.
