Some studies confirm that a lack of sexual activity in an adult can cause stress or anxiety, problems with self-esteem, a less strong immune system, less new neuron production, erectile dysfunction, and vaginal atrophy.
Beyond pleasure, having sex and/or masturbating has a positive effect on health and well-being, but what really happens to the vagina when we stop having sex?
Vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis) is thinning, dryness, and inflammation of the vaginal walls that can occur when there is less estrogen in your body. It tends to happen more often after menopause.
According to an article by Soledad Venesio, People, of TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center, Dr. Mehmet Öz said, “With age, walls become less resistant and more susceptible to trauma. It’s more likely to swell or tear, which can cause pain during intercourse.”
And what is the effect of not having sex? According to Lisa Jambusaria, “If we don’t keep the vagina open during intercourse, it can also start to narrow and shorten.” At this point, the American doctor, in consultation with a trusted doctor, recommends vaginal estrogen replacement therapy to increase the flexibility of the vagina and make sex a more satisfying experience.
One possible solution to vaginal atrophy is to start trying different specialized gels, as the response to stimuli can vary. “Research shows that those who use vibrators recently score higher on the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), which includes Desire, Interest, Lubrication, Arousal, Satisfaction, and Orgasm,” explains sexologist Dr. Jess adds: “This correlation suggests that changes in sexual habits may affect sexual function temporarily.”
It is important to see a doctor if you have pain during intercourse that does not go away with a moisturizer.
