MediaTek introduced the new Dimensity 1080 chipset, which will support its portfolio of mobile solutions with 5G support.
It is an SoC manufactured in 6 nanometer processes that include a ARM octa-core CPU (two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2 GHz). It is compatible with both LPDDR4X and LPDDR5 RAM, for UFS 2.1 and UFS 3.1 storage systems, and supports FHD+ screens with a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz.
If there is little improvement in process performance compared to the Dimensity 1050 presented at Computex, the Chinese manufacturer points to better camera system support, with new features needed to capture high-quality photos and videos. In addition, the chipset integrates a new hardware-accelerated HDR video recording engine to handle resolutions up to 4K.
The same can be said about its connectivity. It is the second development of this series with support for pro mmWave 5G networks. It features 4CC operator aggregation and download speeds approaching 5 Gbps. It is compatible with the latest wireless standards, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
This SoC retains the Artificial Processing Unit (APU) of its predecessor as well as the Mali-G610 MC3 integrated graphics. Sure, it’s just an evolution of the 1050, but it’s always important for MediaTek to keep improving because it’s Qualcomm’s ultimate and—almost unique—competition in third-party mobile chipsets at a time when the giants of this sector such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei or Google itself have committed to their own solutions.

The company expects its partners to sell phones or tablets with this Dimensity 1080 during this quarter. To say that the manufacturer has a complete catalog covering all market lines up to the top of the line Dimensity 9000.
