As reported by Cybernews citing research from HP Wolf Security experts, in September 2022 there was an increase in hacker attacks against private users’ computers using the Magniber ransomware virus.
Ransomware attacks target large organizations and agencies to obtain large ransoms, but now Magniber is “attacking” smaller targets as well. By disguising it as a Windows update or antivirus, attackers convince the victim to download it immediately.
Once downloaded, a ZIP archive is installed on the user’s computer with a JavaScript file inside that launches Magniber into the system. The virus then encrypts all these victims and demands a $2,500 bitcoin ransom for access to the documents.
The virus uses local privilege escalation to allow hackers to take full control of the system without user intervention, eventually encrypting files and redirecting users to a ransomware web page. HP Wolf Security
Experts advised users to minimize the risk of Magniber infection by only downloading updates from trusted sources and backing up data regularly. Source
