There is no doubt that exercise helps us improve our health. But it’s not always easy to make time (or desire) for it. For this reason walking is a good option for the vast majority and starting by giving yourself a minimum number of steps per day challenges is a good way to start.

There are many applications for counting steps from mobile and/or smartwatch. We even have native options on Android and iOS to account for these. I’ve personally tried a few over the years and Activity Tracker suits me best. I won’t say “it changed my life” because I would be lying but it helps me a lot to get motivated to walk every day.

It’s free despite having very cheap ‘Pro’ features

Activity Tracker is available for both Android and iPhone mobile phones, including a version for Apple Watch in the latter case. One app on both systems available without paying anything. However, it offers a ‘Pro’ version that adds the following extras:

Personally, I’m not the type of person whose pocket is sore when paying for an application. Now, this should give me appetizing functions and functions that I finally benefit from. Likewise, as much as I love the application, I do not agree to pay any fees. In the case of Activity Tracker, I find an app for it. Yes, I am ready to pay.

I think the subscription fee is too low but I understand that nonetheless someone doesn’t want to pay for it. After all, every person has different circumstances and you may not be able to take advantage of it. So my advice is to read this article where I outline the potential of the app and whoever wants to try it, do so with the free version first. After all, there is always time to pay.

Simple interface, but very complete

If there’s one thing that overwhelms me with any app, it’s that they’re not very intuitive and practical when they have many functions (which pisses me off even more when they don’t). In the case of Activity Tracker, we find an application that, although ultimately a pedometer, contains: interesting features and very well presented. In my personal case, the learning curve was very fast, although the developer also included a small beginner’s guide to get to know the app.

I use the app on both iPhone and Apple Watch, but I can confirm it’s the same on Android. There’s nothing else to start requests access to configured health data on mobile, which makes its configuration very simple. However, they can also be entered manually.

When it’s all over, we find three tabs:

  • Trends: In this section, you can take a look at our activity in a very visual way through graphics. Observe if we are meeting our daily and weekly goals, see progress over months, weeks, days and even hours.
  • Today: A practical and equally visual way of observing our activity for that day is to see a visual summary of the previous days at the bottom, allowing us to scroll back to see our activity from the previous days in more detail.
  • Profile: the part where we configure the application to our liking. From the highlight color of the app to the configuration of widgets, animations or units of measure.

Another interesting visual element, Find out about our activity in real time via the app icon. When we receive WhatsApp messages we can see a bubble showing the number of messages waiting to be read, the same thing happens in the Activity Tracker icon, we can see the steps we have taken, the calories consumed or the distance traveled. Of course, I have a bad taste at this point, as in some cases I had to log in and out of the app for this trick to update (from what we’ve been able to talk to developer Mike Cosmin, this appears to be an issue derived from iOS background activity management).

Extras that make it my favorite

Aside from the good visual part, combining that with functionality makes Activity Tracker my go-to app to count my steps. To start everything from the very basic, that is, set a step goal accordingly, measure whether the pocket and watch are fulfilled thanks to the motion sensors.

Tasks set per weekI think this is a positive thing. And this is so that we have days to rest when we need it because we are sick and to ‘heal’ them in the next days. you can put at least 3,500 weekly steps (500 per day) and one maximum 210,000 (30,000 per day). To be honest, I didn’t dare the last one. I hope in the future.

Another interesting function is that we can do the following within the personal profile configuration. fix the length of our steps. Logically, we don’t always take the same steps, and no matter how good the app or mobile, we will never know the number of steps with 100 percent accuracy. However, configuring an average of how far we went at each step helps bring it closer to the truth, it can leave it on or off automatically. Set steps from 20 to 140 centimeters.

Besides, it is possible configure different notifications. As standard, we can set a daily reminder so that we get a reminder at eight o’clock in the afternoon to check our activity for that day. This can’t be changed to another time (not even in the ‘Pro’ version), which isn’t a huge disadvantage, but still a disadvantage. The two extra notifications that the ‘Pro’ version adds are a notification of progress towards the daily goal and a notification for the start of the week.

Activity Tracker doesn’t replace more complete fitness apps, but it doesn’t pretend to be. It is a good complement to these and is an excellent motivation for walkers, the most suitable sporting activity for their conditions.

In conclusion, if you are thinking of trying a new app to count steps and you are unfamiliar with Activity Tracker, I sincerely believe you should. give a chance.

Now I also accept that These types of apps are not for everyone.. It doesn’t replace and ultimately complements an app that includes tracking more specific sports and even includes the activity rings of watches like the Apple Watch. However, if you have little time to exercise and have the opportunity to walk, this is a good way to watch and stay motivated tackling challenges and increasing them each time.
