Etevaldo Siqueira, pioneer of technology journalism in Brazil, dies

Known as the father of technology journalism in Brazil, Etevaldo Siqueira died last Sunday.. The journalist, who pioneered technology coverage in the country, was admitted to the Oswaldo Cruz hospital in Sao Paulo, where he was treated for leukemia. The wake is scheduled for this Monday (17), at 14:00, at Velório Samaritano. The funeral is scheduled for 4:00 pm at Bom Pastor Cemetery.

One of the pioneers in this field, he worked from 1967 to 2012 on the pages of a printed newspaper and on the Estadão website.. There, he held several positions as a reporter, editor, special reporter, columnist and blogger. He recently returned to Grupo Estado with the Mundo Digital column on Eldorado FM radio.

Etevaldo became known for paving the way for specialized editorial publications and vehicles to exist. Even before the advent of the Internet, journalists could already foresee the revolution that information technology would bring, especially in the field of communications.

In February 1993, two years before the commercial Internet arrived in Brazil, he wrote in an Estadão column that “the world is witnessing a new revolution in the world of information technology and telecommunications: the voice and data network revolution. the increasing communication capacity of computers.”

Etevaldo has also covered more than 50 editions of CES, the world’s premier electronics show held annually in Las Vegas, USA. At the 50th anniversary event, he even received an award from the organization for his diligence.

Award-winning career and published books

A pioneer in technology coverage in Brazil, Etevaldo has won two Esso Awards, Brazil’s most emblematic journalism award, which can be considered the “Oscars of Journalism”. The first was the report Eis a São Paulo: Ano 2000, released in 1969. The second came with the report “Electronic World of the 80s” nine years later.

In addition to the Esso Journalism Awards, he has also received other awards in this field such as the José Reis Award for Scientific and Technological Dissemination from CNPQ in 1985, the Telesp Communications Award in 1979, the Ministry of Communications Award in 1974 and the 2007 Communiqué. of the year.

During his life as a journalist, he has written several books on communication and technology. Among them are “Intelligent Society: A Revolution in Telecommunications, Computers and Robots” (Bandeirante, 1987), “Three Moments in the History of Telecommunications in Brazil” (December edition 1998), “Brazil: 500 years – eternal in search of freedom ” (December edition, 2000) and “Como Viveremos” (Saraiva, 2004).
