This Tuesday (18) Samsung announced that its LPDDR5X DRAM up to 8.5Gbps finally approved for use on a mobile platform powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. With this, the company breaks the previous record of 7.5 Gb / s, announced in March this year, and continues to lead the market.
The new standard delivers speeds up to 8.5Gbps while reducing power consumption by 20%.
LPDDR5X type memory has been in development for some time and should be equipped with next generation smartphones between late 2022 and 2023. One of the first devices to use this technology will be the Realme GT2 Explorer Master.announced in July.
Low Power DDR5X memory stands out for exactly what it offers high data transfer rate with low power consumption. This is especially useful for mobile platforms that need to optimize the trade-off between performance and battery life.
Validation of new LPDDR5X modules up to 8.5Gb/s according to Daniel Lee, VP of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics promises to accelerate the availability of these components to the market as a whole, which means that we will soon see a lot of smartphones equipped with this technology.
Ziad Asghar, vice president of product management at Qualcomm, says that The new 8.5 Gb/s memory modules will significantly improve the user experience for tasks such as gaming, camera and artificial intelligence (AI).
In its release, Samsung emphasized that LPDDR DRAM covers a much wider market than smartphones. According to the manufacturer, the characteristics of high speed and low power consumption make the new LPDDR5X 8.5Gbps modules very interesting for the PC segment, especially with regard to SFF (Small Form Factor), machines with compact dimensions and reduced weight.
The same applies to laptops, especially now, with the advent of new models with ARM processors (like the recently announced Microsoft Surface Pro 9 with Qualcomm SQ3 chipset).
Low power consumption has also been a central theme for large scale servers, another potential target for LPDDR5X technology. They can benefit from lower carbon and heat emissions, making data center maintenance easier.
Finally, Samsung claims that LPDDR5X memory will have wide applicability in the automotive industry, AI (artificial intelligence) and the metaverse, given that they all require high bandwidth and processing a huge amount of data.
