SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk said he will be accepting donations to fund Internet access in Ukraine via Starlink.. The company’s satellite service has the ability to bring broadband access to the entire territory of Ukraine. The announcement comes a day after the billionaire asked the United States to take over the task.
The decision, made by Elon Musk, comes after Ham Serunjogi, CEO of Fintech Chupper Cash, tweeted that he would donate Starlink internet service to have a presence in Uganda’s schools and hospitals.
Responding to a comment via Twitter, the billionaire asked if there were other people interested in donating to places in need. After thousands of likes and shares, Musk revealed that they would be adding a donation option for Starlink..
Musk asked the Pentagon to pay the costs
Recently, the SpaceX chief executive stated that Starlink is still losing money with satellite internet. This is all especially after they helped Ukraine earlier this year after the Russian invasion in February of this year.
Initially, Musk even asked the US Department of Defense, the Pentagon, to take responsibility for paying for Starlink in Ukraine. He even said at the time that the Internet company was financially unhealthy to continue paying for broadband in the country.
This service was considered necessary for Ukraine to stay connected during the Russian invasion. Starlink will be used by both civilians and the military who need to stay connected during the war against the Ukrainians.
“To hell with it… Even if Starlink is still losing money and other companies are getting billions of taxpayer dollars, we will continue to fund the government of Ukraine for free,” wrote Elon Musk.
Continuation after commercial
In a letter sent to the Pentagon, Elon Musk even stated that funding government and military use of Starlink in Ukraine would cost more than 120 million reais by the end of the year. This figure could be even higher, rising to $400 million over the next 12 months.
Elon Musk will continue to finance Starlink satellite Internet for Ukrainians The US military stressed that they are contacting SpaceX to fund the project.
