Meta announced it’s coming From Communities to WhatsApp. It is a function that will allow us to bring different groups together under the same structure and provide a set of additional tools to improve the organization and management of our conversations.
The company imagines several day-to-day scenarios where Communities can be useful to us. For example, for communication between neighbors in a building, parents in a school, clubs, small businesses, organizations and others. Let’s see the details.
Communities, What’s new in WhatsApp
Communities are not here to replace groupsrather, it feeds on them and, relying on its tools, seeks to reduce the disorder that usually exists in them, such as an infinite number of messages that in many cases cause us to lose important information.
Administrators who will be responsible for the management of these areas will be able to select groups (new or existing) to become part of their Community. They will also have the necessary permissions to delete messages or files that they deem unsuitable for everyone.
If someone adds us or invites us to a Community, as seen in the featured image, at the top we will find a cover photoa profile, the name of the Community, and a description to help us understand what its purpose is.
Below you will find the “Your Groups” section, which will show you which groups we are uniting in. “Other groups” we can join. This will allow us to be a part of the areas that really interest us, and come and go at any time.
It should be noted that unlike social networks and other messaging services, WhatsApp will not have a directory that allows us to discover Communities or groups that may be of interest to us.
In groups that allow this, participate, initiate group conversations, and invite othershowever, only Community admins can post messages to all Community members under a feature called “Community Announcement Group”.
security and privacy
Meta says Communities will also have end-to-end encryption. This is a security feature that makes messages and their content visible only to participants in a conversation, preventing them from falling into the wrong hands if communications are lost.
Also WhatsApp Will continue to use the reporting system to prevent abuse within communities. In case of notification of a message, it will be forwarded to the company for review. If we report a group, the last five messages will be forwarded.
Based on this information, WhatsApp may impose some form of enforcement if its rules are violated. These range from disbanding a community to banning some members or administrators.
Reactions and other functions come
The arrival of communities does not do this alone. Meta will also introduce other features that go beyond its latest feature. we are talking about emoji reactionsIt’s a feature we’ve had for a long time in Telegram, Instagram, Messenger, and now WhatsApp does.
But that’s not all. We will also see how the file sharing limit (PDF, Word, ZIP, RAR), which has so far been 100 MB, will be. will be 2GB. Of course, the maximum size allowed for multimedia files (photos, videos and audio messages) will remain 15MB across all platforms.
We will also benefit from the limit increase. Group calls with up to 32 participants. Until now, we were only able to make group calls with up to 8 people. If we started in batches above this amount, the app stopped recruiting new participants when the limit was reached.
When will Communities be available on WhatsApp?
As Mark Zuckerberg explained in a post on Facebook, Communities is taking its first steps and its distribution will be gradual and slow. Users of beta versions of WhatsApp will be the first to get this feature.
On the other hand, those who use the latest versions (i.e. non-developers or enthusiasts) they will have to wait a bit. But there is more. Communities may also come to Messenger, Facebook, and Instagram in the future.
Now, reactions, group admins’ ability to delete files and messages, share files of up to 2GB and make calls to up to 32 people will be available “in the next few weeks” even before the Communities function is available for everyone.
Don’t forget to have your WhatsApp app (Desktop, iOS, Android) with you if you don’t want to miss this and other features on the way. updated to the latest version.
