It’s essentially a new wave of Netflix’s fight against password sharing. The company believes this has resulted in the first quarterly loss of service subscribers over the past decade.
Flow will charge additional fees for sub-accounts of users other than your immediate household that use your login to access the service. Essentially, Who’s Watching? it will cost you extra money if they don’t live with you.
Netflix has yet to reveal the penalty price, but if they follow the pilot’s quarterly base rate scheme, about 3-4 USD.
For those who want to avoid these penalties, Netflix on Monday introduced an account migration tool that allows a user’s sub-account data (view history, recommendations, etc.) to be transferred to their new, standalone subscription.
Also, the company recently announced a cheaper plan with ads that will cost $7 per month. It will go on sale on November 3rd. The new level will initially be available in ten countries.
